Abstract:
The H3D Centre is a South African-based academic translational research unit that has had many successes and could provide a much-needed model for drug discovery and development in Africa.
Historically, innovative pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) activities have predominantly occurred in the Global North, where technology, infrastructure and a vast pool of skilled scientists are available. African-led health innovation has been hampered by several factors, including but not limited to poor access to infrastructure, scarcity of enabling technology platforms and the lack of a critical mass of skilled scientists.
